Moodle @ GPRC
What’s this Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment all about?
Besides being a mind-numbing acronym, Moodle is an online course management system that will be replacing Blackboard at GPRC. It’s designed to take advantage of students’ familiarity with popular websites like youtube and facebook (#3 and #5, respectively, on the list of most accessed websites in the world) by utilizing a similar look and feel.
Why is GPRC changing systems?
Blackboard licensing fees have been rising steadily over the past few years while available functionality has been limited. Moodle is open-source, which means it’s free to use and modify, and can be customized to offer any desired functionality. Another big advantage of Moodle is its ongoing development by a world-wide community of educators who call themselves Moodlers. Moodle has the ability to be fully integrated with today’s emerging social networking software; making use of blogs , wikis , podcasts , RSS feeds , facebooks , igoogles , twitters , diggs and stumbles directly within a course without having to link to outside websites. (Never heard of these things? Your students probably have.)
When will the change take place?
Course conversions will begin in the Winter of 2009 and continue until the Spring of 2010. By Fall 2010 all Blackboard courses will be converted to Moodle. (Blackboard will continue operating as it has in the past during the conversion process.)
Instructors will be asked to work with Educational Technologies staff in the Library to design their Moodle spaces, but will NOT be required to migrate courses themselves.
Will training be provided?
Training sessions will be offered beginning Winter 2009.
